Because most young soldiers are hapless idiots...

...that was what really spawned this story. Remembering how the vast majority of us weren't old enough to drink (off base...on base was often a different story, the military has its own rules) and were so utterly unequipped to deal with the moral dilemmas of war and combat that we mostly just blocked it out (with alcohol, quite often). So here's my military SF short,
